The city: Chicago. The lake: Lake Michigan.
We are so blessed to live only a few hours away from this gorgeously paintable city. My goodness…I’ve painted it dozens of times! And to top it off, one of our sons lives there. He’s the one who, years ago, gave me the photo which finally inspired this painting. It was a much wider shot, incorporating a broad cityscape, and I couldn’t figure out how to make the composition work.
But as I was recently playing around with it, zooming in on the sailboat, it finally sang to me. The resulting paint on canvas is indeed analagous to a song: vibrations, various notes divided into vertical measures, places of rest, accent notes, and the ebb and flow of a musical phrase.
I hope you enjoy City on a Lake.
