Magical Foundation Layers

It is my practice to half close my eyes and watch myself paint, stopping the brush at a moment’s notice in order to preserve precious bits of the foundational layer underneath. The close-ups shown below are from a new painting called “One Way,” which I’ll be posting in its entirety very soon. I plan to enter it in the upcoming Regional Art Exhibition, which is part of the Grand Rapids Festival of the Arts.

Another common practice of mine: when painting a sign, never complete the whole thing. It would just be wrong.  🙂
